Megadeth Issues Tour Road Report

Megadeth bassist David Ellefson has checked in from the road with the following update:

"Greetings Everyone! Just finished our show in Austin, TX tonight...was fantastic and huge. The SXSW music convention just finished last week so I figured everyone would still be hung over but the town was alive and our show was full of VERY enthusiastic fans. It was good to be back in town again and we broke out 'The Right To Go Insane' for the first time ever. The new video is looking great and should all be launching as the next single shortly. A ton of great stuff brewing. As you saw on the homepage I conducted an interview for Megadeth Radio with Ron McGovney (original METALLICA bassist) while we were in Asheville, NC this past week. In fact, I've done interviews with our friends in EXODUS and TESTAMENT as well. Those should be airing soon.

Our friend Jose Mangin (who conducted the interview) posted his video of us testing out his famous tacos he kindly made and brought to us at the Scranton, PA show. Good backstage fun, especially if you were hungry!

The Strokes Confirm Lollapalooza Slot, Report In on Next Album

With the Strokes in the studio hard at work on their long-awaited follow-up to First Impressions of Earth, frontman Julian Casablancas has reiterated drummer Fab Moretti’s prediction about when the album will be released, telling the Chicago Tribune, “I think it’ll be out in September.” Casablancas added, “I’ve written a lot of melodies for it, but the other guys have also contributed a lot more: melodies, choruses, parts. It’s way more collaborative. So it’ll have a different feel than our other albums.” As Rolling Stone reported last month, Moretti labeled the band’s recent studio sessions a “free for all” of musical ideas.

The Strokes have been rumored to be among the six headliners at this year’s Lollapalooza festival, and Casablancas told the Tribute the news is in fact true. The Tribune predicts the reunited Soundgarden, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire, Green Day and Phoenix will also play Perry Farrell’s annual event, but the festival has yet to confirm this potential lineup. Lollapalooza traditionally unveils its list of performers around April 10th.

It promises to be a busy summer for the Strokes, as the New York rockers have already lined up headlining slots at four European musical festivals this summer: Rockness, South Side, Hurricane and Isle of Wight. Casablancas is also still in the midst of touring in support of his solo album Phrazes for the Young.Multiple Search Engine

Children Of Bodom Writing For New Album

Children Of Bodom give us an insight into how things are going on their brand new album!

Finnish riff-lords Children Of Bodom are hard at work on the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Blooddrunk’. Bodom bassist Henkka Seppälä has offered the following update on how things are going:

“It is great to have a new rehearsal space. We can rehearse whenever and as long as we want. And this is a new thing for us as a band. So making new songs is now really different than before.

“It’s been really exciting, once again, to gather at the rehearsal space and start jamming the new ideas Alexi (Laiho) has in mind for. I’m really excited now, and looking forward every day to get there again to see what’s new this time.

“Soon we will jam some old songs too, since we have these three shows in Finland next month.

“It s been quite a long time since last live show, so that is a fresh thing to do also, the small Fenno-tour. And we’ve never played in Sotkamo area!!!

“We will enter the studio in the middle of next summer. And then we will take our time to track the stuff, then mix it and master it. Then the labels need their time to prepare the release… so unfortunately the release won’t be this year, that’s for sure. We will let you know as soon as we know the date.

“When the tracking is done, the rest of the summertime we will spend at some summer festivals in Europe. And, we will put some footage, diary thingies, from the studio, that’s for sure!”

Children Of Bodom have already been confirmed as co-headliners of this year’s Bloodstock with Fear Factory. Heaven & Hell and Twisted Sister are the other night’s headliners.

PHIL ANSELMO AUTOBIOGRAPHY TO BE CO-AUTHORED BY METALSUCKS’ OWN COREY MITCHELL

Just wanted to give you guys the first official heads-up that I just signed a contract with former Pantera lead singer Phil Anselmo to help him pen his autobiography. Be on the lookout for an official press release next week.

This one has the MetalSucks handprints all over it, as MS co-head cheese Vince Neilstein hooked me up with Anselmo through the most unlikely of sources — Vince’s dad’s girlfriend and Phil’s aunt and uncle.

Rest assured, MS Maniacs will be privy to many exclusives as I help Phil tackle his incredible story. I will do my best to take you behind the scenes of the making of the book, post advance chapters before the book hits the stores, and post deleted material that won’t make the final cut but will be worth reading nonetheless.

Stay tuned to MetalSucks for more details.

Foof Fighters Team Butch Vig For Heaviest Album Yet

Forget all that talk of a hiatus. The Foo Fighters are getting ready to head back into the studio, Dave Grohl revealed at the Independent Spirit Awards on Friday night. Swigging from a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey, the Foos frontman and Them Crooked Vultures drummer, who had just introduced a performance by Best Documentary subjects Anvil, said his band will work with Butch Vig on their seventh album, in part to mark the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind, which Vig produced in 1991. “Me and [Foos drummer] Taylor [Hawkins] have already started demoing songs,” Grohl told Rolling Stone.

But unlike the Foos’ previous two efforts, which were recorded at Studio 606 (a cutting edge recording complex/rehearsal space/party den that the band owns in Northridge, California), this forthcoming album will be recorded entirely in analog — and out of Grohl’s garage. “We’re doing a test on Monday,” he said when asked about potential noise complaints from his Encino neighbors (and the missus). Indeed, the father of two added, “I think this could be our heaviest album yet.”

With no firm timeline for release (though the month September was bandied about), the follow-up to 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace will also be accompanied by a documentary film, said Grohl, that will celebrate the Foos’ 16 years together and chronicle the making of the album. No doubt he was inspired by the movie Anvil! The Story of Anvil. For his Independent Spirit introduction, Grohl went off script and urged not just all musicians, but every person in the room to watch the movie that made him cry.

Mudvayne Banned

Mudvayne are the latest band to drum-up publicity by producing a controversial video that was guaranteed to be banned by major video outlets. Here is the official announcement about the ban: Mudvayne continues to push the envelope with the video for their second single "Beautiful and Strange" off their self-titled album Mudvayne. "Beautiful and Strange" is directed by Frankie Nasso and is the latest installment of three conceptually linked videos that were filmed to promote the band's self-titled album. "Scream With Me", the first single off the album saw great success becoming #2 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Chart.

With the release of the video for "Beautiful and Strange" came the unwillingness of networks, and media sources to play the video due to its disturbing and thought provoking imagery that is meant for mature audiences. The video contains sexually explicit acts that take place in a graveyard and some scenes that involve acts of sadism that is part of a storyline that is linked to the other two videos. The exact definition of the video is left to interpretation and flows beautifully with the other two videos that complete the concept. It has been banned from every outlet except for one; the only place where this video can be seen is on the social networking site vampirefreaks.com.

Mudvayne has been praised for changing the landscape of metal music through their songwriting and now they continue to broaden that landscape with their provocative new video for "Beautiful and Strange". The song is extremely dynamic and is an example of the bands technical abilities as musicians. The release of the third and final video "Heard It All Before" is set to premiere next month.

Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood to score film of Haruki Murakami novel

Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood will reportedly return to film scoring, writing music for an adaptation of Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood. The score will be based on a composition Greenwood wrote for the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Greenwood's last foray into feature films was his Grammy-nominated soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood. Just as that score was derived from an earlier work, Popcorn Superhet Receiver, Greenwood's composition expands upon an orchestral piece called Dogwood, which debuted last month.

The maverick musician announced the project at BBC's Maida Vale studios, following Dogwood's premiere. "I wrote [the] piece mostly in hotels and dressing rooms while touring with Radiohead," he told TwentyFourBit. "This was more practical than glamorous – lots of time sitting indoors, lots of instruments about – and aside from picking up a few geographical working titles, I [don't] think that it had any effect where, on tour, it was written." Greenwood is also listed on the film's Imdb page.

Murakami's 1987 novel, translated into English in 2000, follows Toru Watanabe's nostalgic recollections of the late 60s. These memories are spurred by the sitar-strung sound of the Beatles' Norwegian Wood. The film version is directed by Anh Hung Tran, and will be released in Japan in December.

In the meantime, the Maida Vale performance of Dogwood will be re-broadcast by BBC Radio 3 on 19 March. Greenwood's first movie score, for the 2003 documentary Bodysong, will also soon see an encore: it will be released on DVD on 22 March.

Iron Maiden Singer Bruce Dickinson Loses Radio Show

Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson's radio show "Masters Of Rock" is to be axed, according to the BBC. He will reportedly broadcast his last show at the end of April. Dickinson has been presenting shows for BBC 6 Music since it's launch in 2002 and his current show goes out at 9pm on fridays and finishes at midnight.

A 6 Music spokeswoman says, "6 Music is currently reviewing the way it reflects the Rock/Heavy Metal genres across the network and has decided to decommission the Friday Night Rock Show. The network, however, remains committed to reflecting both genres throughout the schedule as part of its core music offering. We would very much like to thank Bruce Dickinson for the hard work and commitment he has shown to 6 Music over the past eight years."

The Word Alive kicks out drummer

The Word Alive has booted drummer Tony Aguilera from their line-up. The most telling portion of his remarks seem to be the following:

"On our last tour I messed up when the click track I play to off of an iPod Nano started a click late and an 808 was off. Apparently those little mistakes were enough because I was told shortly after we got home from our last tour that they were going to be looking for a new drummer. I had no idea this was going to happen, and had no warning that I was in danger of being kicked out and prior to being told this I would have called them my best friends. I had no problems with anyone in the band, and based on what I thought we were all still good friends and were stoked to write our upcoming full length together. Even though we hadn't practiced or jammed together a single time since before we recorded our CD in March, over 10 months ago, (we played over a hundred shows since then), I am not going to be given the opportunity to show my talent and improvement on the new CD, and even though I've done all the work as a drummer to get them where they are. (Warped Tour, Bamboozle, whatever other tours they've gotten) I guess I can't suck THAT bad..right? So to sum it up this all goes to getting fucked over by the few friends I thought I had."

The band's remaining members have subsequently released the following:

"We will announce the real reasons behind everything soon, all we can hope is that people will be understanding and patient enough to wait, as well as understanding enough to know we would never do something we didn't feel was the best for TWA. All decisions are made as a group, and there's so much misinformation floating around. It's disheartening to see several fans attacking us without having heard the full story. Hopefully our true fans will understand; the ones who don't, we apologize."

Avenged Sevenfold recruits Mike Portnoy

Avenged Sevenfold has recruited Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy to play on their forthcoming album. Portnoy steps in for Avenged Sevenfold drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away in December. The group explains:

"I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it's our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy's all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that's what Jim would have wanted. It's comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities. Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy."

Update: Portnoy has now issued the following:

"Even under normal circumstances, I would've been happy to help the guys out in any way I could as I think Avenged Sevenfold are a great band...but under these incredibly sad and tragic circumstances, I must say I am truly honored to have been asked to play with them and I didn't even have to think twice about saying 'yes.'

"These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there's a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make.

"I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy's memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make.
