Top 5 Guitarists to Follow on Twitter

In the past two years, Twitter has become the best way to get to know your favorite guitarists, outside of their albums. Likewise, it’s the vehicle of choice for musicians looking to connect with their fans. An active Twitter account can be beyond revealing, catching musicians in real time – elated after a performance, angry at a journalist who got it all wrong, drunk as a skunk, or bored and lonesome – and without a publicist. Of course, some of our favorite guitarists will never, not ever, have a Twitter account – the famously guarded Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, for instance – but that’s O.K.

Joe Bonamassa (JBONAMASSA)
An active Tweeter, Gibson signature artist Joe Bonamassa is an open book on his Twitter page, talking most recently about work on his new solo album, his iPad love, the trials and tribulations of furnishing his house, and his ever-changing guitar collection. On June 14, Bonamassa proudly announced, “Ok my search is complete. 1957 ES-350t blonde. Like Chuck Berry’s guitar is in my hands. It cost me a killer 1955 ES-295 but I’m happy.”

The Edge (360FromTheEdge)
U2 guitarist The Edge has ceased being active on Twitter for several months now, but prior to that he was a habitual poster, taking a unique approach to the social network. The Edge refrained from ever making updates with words, instead only posting photos. In a video interview last year he explained, “I’m intrigued by new movements in digital domain and Twitter came along … I didn’t like the idea of a dialogue. From my experience words on the ’Net are very easy to misinterpret … But I thought an interesting way to use Twitter is to just use a photo diary so I’ve been sending loads of photographs out on this Twitter and people seem to like it.”

Joe Perry (admiralperry)
Though he’s taken a Twitter hiatus for over a month now, we’re confident Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry will resume Tweeting soon. After all, he is a world-class social networker, posting mundane things like photos of his sausage-and-egg breakfast, sending shout-outs to his wife and confiding that he, like any good rocker, is “still trying to figure out the ultimate set list.”

Slash (slash)
Further proof that behind the towering top hat and dark sunglasses Slash is actually a congenial, approachable guy, his Twitter page is crammed with enthusiastic accounts of concerts, sporting events and family matters. The Gibson signature artist is currently in the middle of touring to support his self-titled solo album and has been updating his status several times a day.

Jorma Kaukonen (jormakaukonen)
Endearingly, Big Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen says that his policy is to follow all of the people on Twitter who follow him. That means, so long as you follow his Tweets, there’s a good chance Kaukonen could be reading your updates too. These days Kaukonen stays busy with his Fur Peace Ranch, a guitar camp in Meigs Co., OH, which frequently hosts workshops that he Tweets about. But Kaukonen also updates fans about his own gigs, saying last month, “Last night G.E. Smith, Barry Mitterhoff and I descended in the Iridium and met up with Lou and the boys of the Les Paul Trio. Les Paul was such an important figure in all our lives it was an honor to be a little part of his ongoing legend.”

Serj Tankian: new song available for free download

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian will release a new studio album, titled "Imperfect Harmonies", on September 7 via Serjical Strike/Reprise Records. The follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2007 solo debut "Elect the Dead" was once again produced by Tankian himself at his home studio in Los Angeles.

A track from the forthcoming CD, "Borders Are", is now available for free download at serjtankiandotcom (e-mail sign-up required).

"'Elect the Dead' is essentially a rock record with progressive melodic elements," Tankian says. "'Imperfect Harmonies' could be classified as rock because it is punchy with many peaks throughout, but the instrumentation is somewhat different. Though there are live drums, bass, and some guitars, the driving aspects are electronic and orchestral. It's quite unique in its sound palette. This is, in essence, music that has sat in the vat and matured to a ripe sensation and is now ready to serve."

So far, "Imperfect Harmonies" is shaping up to be as powerful and musically eclectic as its predecessor. "I have been calling the music 'electro-orchestral-jazz-rock' because it has all of those aspects in prominence within the songs," Tankian says. "A few are more stripped down, but the majority of the songs have this huge wall of sound presented in a way I've never heard before. It's not common to have a song that is both electronic and orchestral since one is synthetic and the other organic, but I found a way of meshing a lot of these colors together."

The album has been influenced by Tankian's experience making "Elect the Dead Symphony", a symphonic interpretation of his debut that had its inaugural performance in New Zealand with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in March 2009. The performance has been captured on the recently released CD/DVD "Elect the Dead Symphony".

"The making of 'Elect the Dead Symphony' gave me the confidence and tools to create ensemble pieces for orchestra more confidently and effectively than before," Tankian says. "And that became one of the primary colors for this record along with electronic, jazz, and live instrumentation."

Once again, Tankian's album takes a multi-themed approach to the lyrics, which he describes as addressing the political, environmental, social, and personal. "There is a slightly eerie urgency this time around though," he says. "It's darker and more dense in approach, both lyrically and musically."

"My intentions have always been to make music that is creative, quality, and moving," he continues. "I have never learned the static method of repeating myself musically whether in System [Of A Down] or now. Each record I have made has been different musically, yet they all carry the same integral spirit."

Ex Shinedown Guitarist Joins Fuel

In a post on the band's website, Fuel lead singer Brett Scallions staed that the band's guitarist Yogi Lonich will be leaving the band and be replaced by ex-Shinedown guitarist Jasin Todd.

"Yogi has accepted a gig in Japan for the next three months and it conflicts with the schedule that we are trying to put together for Fuel," explained Scallions in the post. "I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Yogi and I’ll miss having him next to me on the stage. He’s a great guitarist and a wonderful friend."

The addition of Todd to the band is the second ex-Shinedown member to join Fuel, when bassist Brad Stewart joined the reformed band earlier this year.

"Jasin is a great guitarist and a very talented songwriter," said Scallions of the new recruit. "I know, I know. There’s more Shinedown on the stage than there is Fuel. I can’t wait to hear the jokes."

Fuel, in its latest form, was announced earlier this spring in a press release from the band, announcing Scallions return to the band, even though he is the only original member currently in the band. Prior to the announcement, Scallions had been touring under the name Re-fueled playing previously recorded songs by Fuel. Scallions left Fuel in 2006, and founding member and songwriter Carl Bell continued the band with new lead singer Toryn Green. The band would release one album, Angels & Devils in 2007. Bell is currently working on songwriting for other musicians and writing for film and TV.

The 12 Greatest Costumed Rock Bands Ever

Rock and Roll has had its share of larger than life characters. Some were born with an innate charisma that just demanded attention: Elvis, Jim Morrison, and Iggy Pop, for example. Other artists, however, fully embraced rock and roll’s shared sense of rebellion and theater to create new personas through costume. At StarCostumes.com, they have an affinity (and maybe a little bias) for these artists. So, without further ado, we present you The 12 Greatest Costumed Rock Bands Ever by StarCostumes.com!

12. Mortiis
Havard Ellefsen is the brainchild behind the man and the band, Mortiis. Hailing from Norway, a nation whose musical contributions are most associated with the black metal genre, it is not uncommon for artists to sport some sort of make up and leather. Combining industrial rock and ambient electronica, in turn, Mortiis take costuming further with custom created prosthetic face and ear pieces, dreadlocks, and dress that sometimes is no more than mummy wrapping and sometimes shredded leather covered in corn flour.

11. Behemoth
For nearly 20 years, the Polish black metal band has been using it’s anti-Christian lyrics and breakneck rhythms to become one of the most notorious metal bands in the world. While their live shows may feature them wearing standard black metal fare of leather with big steel spikes, and white face paint with some black smears here and there, it’s the photo shoots where Behemoth shines. From custom fit leather frocks laden with zippers and chains to body armor reminiscent of Roman warriors, Behemoth takes their costumes seriously. After all, they have a bad reputation to uphold.

10. Red Hot Chili Peppers
While they may not be the first band that comes to mind when you think of costumed bands, but there was a time in the mid-90s when these SoCal funky punks donned some of the most outrageous costumes ever. From being dresses as light bulbs, to wearing just a sock on their genitals, to wearing helmets that shot fire 10 feet into the air, they not only wore these things, but actually delivered full 90-minute sets that way!

9. Mushroomhead
From the hometown of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland, Ohio), comes the masked metal band known as Mushroomhead. While their costumes have changed little over the years, their most popular look features black jump suits and black masks with X’s across the face. Interestingly, the impetus for Mushroomhead to wear costumes was not to create a new identity as much as it was to hide their own identities, because they were originally a side project of several other more popular Cleveland-based bands and wanted to keep their identities separate.

8. Alice Cooper
Every trend has to come back to one individual, the person who set the trend in motion. When talking about rock bands and artists who perform in costume, it all starts with Alice Cooper. From the streets of Detroit Rock City, Alice Cooper used the experimental period of the ’60s to start changing a normal rock show to a theatrical tour de force, complete with guillotines, snakes, electric chairs and, of course, his trademark black eye makeup and leather costuming. Without Alice Cooper, it is suffice to say that nobody else on this list would be here.

7. Hollywood Undead
The youngest band on this list, Hollywood Undead are also the least adventurous when it comes to costuming. Often sporting simple plastic hockey masks, poorly applied makeup, or just bandanas, it’s as if they hardly even make an effort. The genius of this, however, is that they motivated thousands of young angst-driven boys on MySpace to also start wearing bandanas on their faces, specifically because it didn’t take much effort. Yes, they lowered costuming bar to reach the most apathetic crowd… and it worked!

6. Lordi
When your front man is a costume designer by trade, well, it’s pretty much a forgone conclusion that you are a band that is going to be wearing costumes. Hailing from Finland, the band Lordi is named after founding member… Mr. Lordi. They rose to fame as the winners of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, making them the first Finn’s to ever win the contest. Their grotesque masks and medieval garb combined with big ’80s-era hooks landed them gigs on the Ozzfest tour mainstage. In recent years, however, their popularity has waned.

5. Mudvayne
While Mudvayne no longer wears makeup or costumes, part of their identity early in their career was very much tied to makeup and costumes. During the era of their first release, the band relied very heavily on facepaint coupled with experimental hair styles. For their second release, they donned alien masks and colored suits to offer their fans something new and different. Since that time, they have been makeup and costume free, but their diehard fans still associate them with that style.

4. Marilyn Manson
While costume is primarily used as a way to draw attention and controversy, perhaps no artist on this list has received more of either than Marilyn Manson. Early in his career, as the front man of Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids, his garb was more colorful, evoking images of circus performers or even Willy Wonka. By the time he released Antichrist Superstar in 1996, his image and costume switched very heavily to a raw gothic style characterized by prosthetic wings and other appendages, as well as rag clothing. While he has reinvented his look several times in his career, he is most often associated with goth makeup and costumes today.

3. Slipknot
Few bands on this list have reached such critical acclaim as quickly as Slipknot. With seven grammy nominations (and one win), two platinum records, and two gold records in just 10 years, it’s easy to forget that Slipknot’s initial notoriety came in large because they wear masks. In fact, with matching jumpsuits, horrific masks, and numbers (instead of names), Slipknot’s initial image was a new level of shock. Kudos to The ‘knot for having the good sense to license their masks for merchandising as well.

2. Kiss
There are stars. There are superstars, Then there’s Kiss. With 24 gold albums and more than 100 million records sold worldwide, they aren’t just an amazing costumed band, they are the band that used face paint and costumes to create a brand that is as instantly recognizable as Nike or Coke. Add firebreathing, blood spitting, lasers, and enough pyro to stock a small army, and Kiss’s live show does everything to cement their reputation as the quintessential rock band, even as the members of Kiss enter their 60s.

1. GWAR
Until Gwar, Alice Cooper and Kiss had the market on shock rock, but their approaches were rooted in makeup and traditional theater posturings. When Gwar arrived, they did so in full latex costumes and sci-fi personas. Looking less like something from a Kubuki production and more like something out of an Alien movie, their stageshows notoriosly address taboo subjects and often leave concert-goers walking home drenched in fake bodily fluids. With an image like that, it would be easy to forget that they also have two Grammy awards.

The Big Four Rock by Satellite

Thrash veterans Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica have never before all played the same show or festival. This isn’t too surprising, as that is a lot of stars and egos to get into one place at one time – someone has to play first, and only one band can play last. But finally in summer of 2010 the Sonisphere Festivals wrangled all four together to play seven dates in Europe. Because there are no North American dates the bands arranged to have the show in Sofia, Bulgaria beamed by satellite to hundred of theaters back home. And while there are plenty of ways to nitpick the negatives, the end result is a hugely entertaining concert via video.

Anthrax kicked the show off, easily playing the part of happy puppy bounding about, full of energy and ready to play. Their energy was effusive and constant, and fan favorites like “Antisocial,” “Madhouse” and “I Am The Law” were well received by the already large crowd. Newly re-re-reunited vocalist Joey Belladona didn’t have much to say between songs, although he did manage to have a chat about the nice weather amid random expletives. The highlight of the set was easily “Indians” which included a “Heaven and Hell” cover during the bridge; the band was heartfelt for the Dio tribute, and Belladona did a surprisingly good Dio imitation. By the end of the 45-minute set, it was clear that Anthrax didn’t want to leave the stage.

Megadeth followed and after a simple “here we go” from Dave Mustaine they ripped off “Holy Wars” like a bandaid from a fatal wound. Midway through the song a pretty deep rain started despite Belladona’s earlier comments, which a moderately cynical Mustaine wouldn’t have been shocked at – “it always rains on Megadeth” – but he was in a good mood today, even breaking a genuine smile during his final farewell. Megadeth was easily the most businesslike of any of the four bands, polished and clean, with each soloist featured alone at the front of the stage and good spacing kept between players during the verses and choruses. “Sweating Bullets” was full of Mustaine’s sneer, and new sidekick Chris Broderick tore the solo on “Symphony of Destruction” completely open. The return of David Ellefson was a particular highlight, as was the previously mentioned true enjoyment by Mustaine.

Slayer was all business. Restricted to a 45 minute set (like everyone but Metallica, who got 75 minutes), they plowed straight ahead the whole time. Set opener “World Painted Blood” played really well live, and classics “South of Heaven” and “Raining Blood” got huge mosh pits roiling and rolling. Easily the most intense of the four bands, Slayer was the expected avalanche of brutality, with their speed and chords bordering on tremolo at times. Kerry King even wore the huge porcupine-spiked gauntlet for a while, adding to the brutal effect. Hanneman and King were always “this close” to completely flying off the rails and Dave Lombardo was a whirlwind on the skins. Ultimately with a straightforward set like this there isn’t much to say except “well done” and “ouch.”

Metallica closed the show and they were so jacked up set opener “Creeping Death” seemed to fly by in just seconds. Finding a better groove during “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” old favorites flowed from there: “Harvester of Sorrow,” “One,” “Enter Sandman” and “Master of Puppets” were competent and heavy, accompanied by pyrotechnics and fireworks when appropriate. The standout performance here was surprisingly from Lars – he pounded his kit with such ferocity and excitement that he was close to knocking the whole thing over numerous times, but he dominated a tentative Hammett and somewhat sloppy Hetfield.

Hetfield was easily the most effusive of any of the band leaders, and Metallica’s more epic songs and pyrotechnics at night made their set a much larger deal than any of the other bands’ sets. Accordingly Metallica acted like they were the biggest of the four, which they probably are. While the crowd in Sofia eagerly bopped and danced along to Anthrax’s fun grooves, played tons of reverent air guitar with Megadeth and snapped their necks head banging with Slayer, they absolutely and completely lost their shit while Metallica was on. The minute those four guys (horsemen?) stepped onstage every arm, leg, hand, foot, dick and boob was in the air, horns high.

The video show itself had a few surprises. Between Slayer and Metallica there was a ten minute Dio tribute that consisted of various band members telling stories and memories of and about Dio; it too was heartfelt, and some of the comments were quite moving. The break in Metallica’s set when all the bands came back our and jammed on “Am I Evil” (amid endless hugs and fist pounds) was phenomenal. Those chords never sounded so heavy as when Ian, Caggiano, Broderick, Mustaine, Hanneman, King, Hetfield and Hammett all fired away in unison. Easily the highlight of the entire show, it would have been great had they played more together, but Hetfield eventually shooed them off so Metallica could finish their business.

It would be easy to critique the show for its faults: why would all the bands not finish the entire show together, instead letting Metallica close it out on a stage that seemed suddenly empty? Why did three all-time bands get only 45 minutes to play? Why is Hetfield so nice now? (The Black-era surly and sarcastic Hetfield was much more entertaining.) Why do Testament and Exodus always get left out? Why did the video broadcast not include Metallica’s entire set? (“Fuel,” “That Was Just Your Life,” “Sad But True,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” “All Nightmare Long” and “Blackened” were all left out.)

But in the end this wasn’t a thrash documentary, an actual concert, an academic study or even an old-boys-club love-in. From the video of the pre-concert setup that was shown while the theater audience walked in to the end credits, this was a celebration of heavy metal music as played by four of the best heavy metal bands ever, and it absolutely, truly, and utterly rocked.

Foo Fighters Guitarist Goes Country

Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett has released details on his new side-project, which looks like it might steer a bit away from the hard-hitting rock and roll of Dave Grohl and company.

The Dead Peasants, Shiflett's new outfit, draws influences from old country music and rockabilly, among other styles, according to an interview he recently gave to NME. The guitarist has also cited a love for modern Americana artists, including Wilco and Ryan Adams.

"There's really no real big loud Les Paul [guitar] pumping through a Marshall amp kind of moments on this record," he said. "It is so far from anything I've been a part of with Foo Fighters and it was just really fun to do."

Eddie Perez of The Mavericks appears extensively on the Dead Peasants' upcoming self-titled album, which will hit stores July 12.

The Goo Goo Dolls New Album Out August 31

The Goo Goo Dolls long awaited new album, Something for the Rest of Us, now has an official release date of August 31st. The album marks the band's return after a four year hiatus.

Produced by Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam, David Bowie) with additional production by Butch Vig (Green Day, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, etc.) John Fields (Paul Westerberg, Jimmy Eat World), Something for the Rest of Us is the band's ninth studio release, and was several years in the making.

“It’s exciting because it’s all ahead of us now," Goo's bassist Robby Takac told Alternative Addiction during an interview in April. "We have done so much just sitting around for the last three years getting this record done, waiting for people to be available, so it’s really nice to be active now.”

The timing for the release might turn out to be perfect, as Takac believes that many music fans are yearning for something with a bit more substance that much of the music that is played on radio today.

“This is a really great time for us to take a step out with some real music again,” said Takac. “There is a lot of prefab stuff that is out there right now that people are getting fed, I think it’s a really great time for this kind of record again.”

The Tracklisting for "Something For The Rest of Us" is as follows:

“Sweetest Lie”
“As I Am”
“Home”
“Notbroken”
“One Night”
“Nothing Is Real”
“Now I Hear”
“Still Your Song”
“Something For The Rest Of Us”
“Say You’re Free”
“Hey Ya”
“Soldier”

Eyes Set To Kill's Biography

Eyes Set to Kill have taken the hardcore community by storm with an intense live show and a crushing EP. They unleash a whirlwind of melodic guitar riffs that violently flood into the ears of listeners, emotionally capturing screams, and hypnotizing melodic vocal hooks that seethe with emotion.

Originally conceived by as the two piece of consisting of Alexia Rodriguez (Lead Guitar, Vocals), and Anissa Rodriguez (Bass Guitar), this Phoenix , AZ post-hardcore outfit attempted to create a unique sound that would combine the soft, melodic feel of female vocals and gut-wrenching screaming, backed up by powerful instrumentals with a post-hardcore influence.

“Having a screamer and a melodic singer has just always been our vision. We wanted to try something different because we didn’t want to be the typical mall emo band,” said former singer Lindsey Vogt. “We didn’t try to make our songs a certain sound. We play what we feel.”

Searching the local area for talented and dedicated musicians to create this sound the group was frequently ignored and turned down by sexist musicians, despite their obvious talent and potential. The girls were classified, stereotyped, and rejected by the ignorant music scene before their demo was given a mere listen.

“People just assumed we were going to be just another chick band that has no musical talent,” Vogt said. “Since we were girls, no one took us seriously and assumed that we couldn’t play and write good songs.”

After struggling to be heard for what seemed an eternity, the girls found their missing pieces in early 2006 with the addition of Greg Kerwin, (Guitar), Brandon Anderson (Vocals), and Caleb Clifton(Drums) to an already blistering line-up. From there the band would share stages with the likes of Chiodos, Blessthefall, Goodbye Tomorrow, My American Heart, and Greeley Estates and even did a stint on the Warped Tour.

“We booked our first tour this summer completely through MySpace,” says Screamer Brandon Anderson about the young band embracing a ‘do it yourself’ work ethic. “The band operates our own MySpace; reply to all comments, messages, and friend requests and does a lot promoting. Our manager made our DVD, music videos and live videos. We do everything on our own and don’t wait around for anyone.”

New Drummer And Guitarist Of All Shall Perish

Oakland, California deathcore outfit All Shall Perish has announced that they have recruited a new drummer, as well as a new touring guitarist, after their previous lead player Jason Richardson left the band. A message from the band reads as follows:

"So we're long due for an update on the currently happenings of All Shall Perish. Firstly, we're pleased to announce that Adam Pierce (Sea Of Treachery) has come onboard as our new drummer. Yes, this means that one of our original members, Matt Kuykendall, is no longer in the band. It's always tough to part ways with a long-time member and friend, but it was absolutely necessary in order to maintain forward progress. Also, as many of you may already know, our most recent lead guitarist, Jason Richardson, has left ASP and joined Born Of Osiris. That being said, we'd like you all to welcome Francesco Artusato, originally hailing from Treviso, Italy, as our new touring guitarist for the foreseeable future. This is the line-up you'll see throughout this year and hopefully well beyond. We feel great about these new additions and are confident that the ASP fans will make them feel welcome! There will be new photos and more updates coming soon. Come see us on Summer Slaughter and hang out!"

Patrick Stump Records Solo Album?

Patrick Stump Records Solo Album, But Don't Call It That! 'Solo' just sounds to me like it implies that it's some kind of vacation,' Fall Out Boy singer says. There's a reason Patrick Stump's Web site just underwent a rather drastic redesign, but it's not what you think. OK, well, it sort of is.

On Wednesday, the Fall Out Boy singer scrapped the cartoony feel of his site (the floating illustration of his head will truly be missed) in favor of a black screen and a rather foreboding quote from French author Anais Nin written in white lettering: "And the time came when the risk it took to stay closed in a bud became more painful than the risk it took to bloom."

Most fans interpreted that quote to mean he's going solo, especially with Fall Out Boy on a sort of free-form hiatus at the moment. Stump, however, says he made the change not to kick off some confounding viral campaign for his first solo effort, but because he had just grown tired of the old site's color scheme.

"I don't really believe in viral stuff and manufactured mystery," Stump wrote to MTV News in an e-mail. "I just didn't like the way my site looked anymore."

But, oh, now that you mention it, he is working on a solo album. "I'm working on an album," he continued. "I'll be writing/producing/performing everything myself. Stay tuned."

Stump — who has produced for the likes of Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes and the Cab — wouldn't reveal any additional details about his mysterious new album. But he updated his Web site again on Thursday (January 28), this time with a video that showed him playing drums, guitar, organ and horns (among other things) on a rather funky track. Oh, and he'd really prefer if you didn't call the album "a solo project." Seems that phrase carries with it some decidedly bad connotations.

"I never liked that phrase, but I'm sure it will get used," he wrote. " 'Solo' just sounds to me like it implies that it's some kind of vacation or something, you know?"

The Rev's Death Due To Accidental Drug Overdose

Six months after Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan's death, the cause of death has been determined as an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol, Orange County Deputy Coroner Mitchell Sigal told Rolling Stone. Toxicology reports indicate that Sullivan suffered "acute polydrug intoxication due to combined effects of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/Nordiazepam and ethanol." Sigal added that Sullivan also had cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), which was marked in the coroner's report as a "significant condition" that may have played a role in the drummer's death. The Coroner's Department conducted "five or six" different tests to verify the cause of death, Sigal added.

Oxycodone is painkiller that substitutes for Codeine, Oxymorphone is a painkiller similar to Morphine, Diazepam/Nordiazepam are anxiety medications and ethanol is the intoxicant in alcohol. Actor Heath Ledger similarly died from acute polydrug intoxication on January 22, 2008.

Sullivan, 28, died at his home in Huntington Beach, California. He was buried in a private ceremony on January 6th. Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates delivered a eulogy at the cemetery in front of the band, Sullivan's wife and family, ex-Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, Bullet For My Valentine frontman Matt Tuck and members of Buckcherry and My Chemical Romance.

Since The Rev's death, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy stepped in behind the kit to finish recording the new album, and then later to help out tour.

New Found Glory Guitarist Have Cancer?

New Found Glory Guitarist May Have Cancer was a top story in Jan. Here is the recap: Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory told fans that he is having surgery to remove half of his possibly cancerous thyroid. He posted a Twitter link to the following blog statement (However, nothing has been posted on the band's official site):

"Two weeks ago when I went to the Doctor with pneumonia.. they found some nodules in my thyroid , and one of them is a little bigger then a quarter. They did a biopsy and the report came back that there are some suspicious cells in the cyst. So due to the size and to be safe, Today at 2:45 I am having surgery and getting half of my thyroid removed. Immediately after removing it they will observe it and see if it looks like a cancer. If they find anything they will remove the rest of my thyroid. The odds are in my favor for it to be nothing which keeps me positive going in…

"I am only planning on missing the first three shows of this tour, and my good friend Anthony Raneri from the band Bayside will be filling in for me until i make it back out. Thanks again for all the love and support and I hope to see you all super soon."

M. Shadows Says Goodbye to Late Bandmate

Avenged Sevenfold Frontman Says Goodbye to Late Bandmate was a top story in Jan. Here is the recap: Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows paid tribute to his friend and bandmate, James "The Rev" Sullivan, in a new online post. The A7X drummer died on December 28. Here is part of that tribute:

"Jimmy was my best friend, as he was best friends with many other people including the members of Avenged Sevenfold. He was hands down the greatest person I have ever known. I told him I loved him everyday. He demanded your love and was never afraid to give it back. I have walked side by side with Jimmy, everyday, for the last 18 years of my life.

I have no memories before Jimmy, and it's going to be damn hard to move forward without him here. It still doesn't seem real. He was my best friend, songwriting partner, band mate, confidant, and most importantly, he was my brother. The crazy thing about Jimmy was that everyday was a crazy story. We have told our favorite Jimmy stories for the last 2 weeks and never have we repeated ourselves. This guy was magical.

"The out pour of art from his soul was unlike the world has ever seen. Unless you spent a day with Jimmy, or 18 years, it's impossible to explain, so I'm not going to try. He inspired people in different ways. He wasn't just a drummer, he honestly didn't care so much for the technical side of drums, cause he could play anything he wanted. He was all about creating beautiful songs, original fills and hopefully touching people with his art and mind. He told all of us for years, including his parents, that he knew two things in life. He wanted to be a rockstar, and that he wasn't going to live past 30 years old. He was right on both accounts, but I know Jimmy, and if he knew how much pain this would cause for the ones he left behind, he would have done anything he could to stick around a little longer".

Keep rockin' Avenged Sevenfold!!

Megadeth Profiles

Megadeth is an American thrash metal band led by founder, front man, guitarist, and songwriter Dave Mustaine. Formed in 1983 Los Angeles, California with bass player David Ellefson following Mustaine’s departure from Metallica, the band has since released twelve studio albums, six live albums, two EPs, thirty singles, thirty-two music videos, and three compilations.

Megadeth disbanded in 2002 after Mustaine suffered a severe nerve injury to his left arm, but following extensive physical therapy, Mustaine reformed the band in 2004 and released The System Has Failed, followed by United Abominations in 2007; the albums deputed on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #18 and #8, respectively.

Megadeth is known for a distinctive guitar style, often involving complex, intricate musical passages, and trade off guitar solos. Mustaine is also known for his original “snarling” vocal style, as well as his recurring lyrical themes, often involving politics, war, addiction, and personal relationships.

As one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands of all time, Megadeth has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, including six consecutive platinum albums, with seven consecutive Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance. In the band’s 23 active years, Megadeth has had 20 official members, with Dave Mustaine remaining as the driving force, main songwriter, and sole original member following the end his musical partnership with David Ellefson in 2002. Megadeth is hailed as one of the bands among the “Big Four of Thrash,” along with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, who were responsible for creating and popularizing the genre in the 1980s.

Just two months after Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica in 1983, guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine formed the thrash metal quartet Megadeth. Though Megadeth followed the basic blueprint of Metallica’s relentless attack, Mustaine’s group distinguished themselves from his earlier band by adding an emphasis on instrumental skills, speeding the tempo up slightly, and making the instrumental attack harsher. By streamlining the classic thrash metal approach and making the music more threatening, as well as making the lyrics more nihilistic, Megadeth became one of the leading bands of the genre during the mid-’80s and late ’80s. Each album they released went at least gold, and they continually sold out arenas across America, in addition to developing a strong following overseas. By the early ’90s, they had toned their music down slightly, yet that simply increased their following; all of their proper ’90s albums debuted in the Top Ten.

Throughout Megadeth’s many lineup changes, the two core members were bassist Dave Ellefson and guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine (born September 13, 1961), who was the band’s official leader. Mustaine grew up in the suburbs of Southern California, where he was raised by his mother in a broken home; frequently, his mother left him to be raised by aunts and uncles, who never encouraged his musical inclinations and often belittled him for his fondness for heavy metal. In 1981, he formed Metallica with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Mustaine spent two years with Metallica, developing a strong cult following in California’s underground metal scene, before he was kicked out of the group in 1983, allegedly over his substance abuse.

For the next few years, Megadeth toured and gained a following, signing with the independent label Combat in late 1984. The following year, the group released their debut, Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good!, which received strong reviews, not only in metal-oriented publications, but also in mainstream music magazines. The album sold very well for an independent release, which attracted the attention of major record labels. By the end of the year, the group had signed with Capitol. Megadeth’s first major-label album, Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying?, was released in the fall of 1986. Like its predecessor, Peace Sells was greeted by strong reviews and sales; it eventually went platinum.

In January 1988 Megadeth released So Far, So Good… So What!, and while the album was eventually certified platinum in the United States, it was initially panned by critics, with Allmusic complaining that the album “lacked conceptual unity and musical bite”, and that it “wants to sound threatening but mostly comes off as forced and somewhat juvenile”. So Far, So Good… featured the single “In My Darkest Hour”, with music written by Mustaine as a tribute to fallen Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. The song remains a fan favorite, and has been performed at nearly every Megadeth show since. So Far, So Good… also featured a cover version of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the UK”, with lyrics altered by Mustaine (who later admitted to hearing them wrong).

Now one of the most popular metal bands in the world, Megadeth moved further toward the mainstream with Youthanasia in 1994, which entered the charts at number four and, like its predecessor, went platinum. The following year, the group released Hidden Treasures, a rarities collection that featured some of the soundtrack tunes that had helped expand the group’s MTV audience in the early ’90s. 1997’s Cryptic Writings found Megadeth fully embraced by album rock radio, which formerly would never have touched the band. Ex-Suicidal Tendencies drummer Jimmy DeGrasso signed on in 1998, in time for the following year’s Risk. In 200f0, following the release of the best-of Capitol Punishment, Marty Friedman followed Nick Menza out the door; he was replaced by former Savatage and Alice Cooper guitarist Al Pitrelli. After signing with the BMG subsidiary Sanctuary, Megadeth debuted its new lineup on 2001’s The World Needs a Hero.

While on break from touring, Mustaine suffered a serious injury in January 2002 while staying in Texas. He was diagnosed with having radial neuropathy shortly thereafter, a condition that prevented him from playing guitar. The compressed radial nerves in his left arm and hand were strained, leaving Megadeth little recourse but to disband in April 2002, after almost 20 years in the music industry. During his time off, Mustaine prepared an elaborate reissue campaign, remastering each album and reissuing them all with bonus material. This campaign set the stage for a Megadeth revival, which came in 2004-2005 with a surprising comeback album, The System Has Failed, and some heavy touring. Capitol released a new best-of, simply titled Greatest Hits, just as Megadeth hit the summer concert circuit, headlining Mustaine’s own Gigantour festival. In 2007 Megadeth released the politically charged United Abominations.

A few weeks ago Megadeth released their 12th studio album ‘’Endgame’’ wich was recorded at ‘’Vics garage’‘

Megadeth is scheduled to tour with Judas Priest and Testament at Priest Feast 2009.

The New Album of Kings Of Leon Will Be Darker

For their fifth album. and follow up to their 2008 breakout album 'Only By the Night,' Kings of Leon say fans can expect an album with a darker sound than their previous albums.

"It's the first time we've ever recorded in New York City, [so] we thought we'd come out with a little darker record 'cause we'd done all our [other] records in either Nashville or L.A., where it's a little more chilled out, not as much hustle and bustle," explained Kings Of Leon drummer Nathan Followill who went on to say the band doesn't fee any pressure despite the immense success of their previous effort.

"Honestly, with the success of the last record...a lot of people thought we would put a lot of pressure on ourselves and go in there and try to recreate what we thought was successful on the last record," Followill explained. "[All the songs on this record], we feel, fits perfectly for this project. It'll be interesting to see how well-received it is."

The album does not have an official release date yet, nor does it have a title. The band is expected to road test some of the new material during its summer North American tour, which begins June 5 in Atlantic City and is highlighted by an apperance at Bonnaroo.

CHILDREN OF BODOM - European Summer Festival Schedule Updated

Children Of Bodom bassist Henkka T. Blacksmith recently checked in with the following update:

"It is great to have a new rehearsal space. We can rehearse whenever and as long as we want. And this is a new thing for us as a band. So making new songs is now really different than before.

It's been really exciting, once again, to gather at the rehearsal space and start jamming the new ideas Alexi has in mind for. I'm really excited now, and looking forward everyday to get there again to see what's new this time.

We will enter the studio in the middle of next summer. And then we will take our time to track the stuff, then mix it and master it. Then the labels need their time to prepare the release... so unfortunately the release won't be this year, that's for sure. We will let you know as soon as we know the date.

Finland's CHILDREN OF BODOM have checked in with an updated European summer festival schedule. It is now as follows:

August
11 - Budapest, Hungary - Sziget Festival
12 - Jaromer, Czech Republic - Brutal Assault Festival
14 - Walton On Trent, UK - Bloodstock Festival
15 - Vantaa, Finland - Ankkarock
21 - Dinkelsbühl, Germany - Summer Breeze

Deftones Profiles

Deftones is an American rock band from Sacramento, California formed in 1988, consisting of Chino Moreno (lead vocals and guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Chi Cheng (bass), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), and Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion).

While they were mostly considered as a nu metal band in their early years, their sound progressively evolved into something more complex and experimental, as a result they are often coined today as an alternative metal band.

Critics have often praised them as one of the closest to unique rock bands of recent years for their innovative, atmospheric music; as Johnny Loftus writes, “Rock critics usually reserve a special place for Deftones above or at least away from the rest of the turn-of-the-century metal movement […] Deftones have always seemed more curious, more willing to incorporate traditionally revered sounds like dream pop into their Northern California alt-metal.”

Frontman Chino Moreno’s poetic lyrics—described by a Time magazine critic as “fiercely intelligent”—are often evocative, yet are sparse enough to allow for multiple interpretations. Moreno has cited Morrissey, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, The Cure’s Robert Smith, and Depeche Mode’s David Gahan among his favorite singers, and beyond an occasional similarity in vocal technique, these singers’ sweeping sense of drama and delicate vulnerability is often evident in Moreno’s vocals and has often been likened to that of Daryl Palumbo(glassjaw).

Papa Roach Ready Time For Annihilation

Papa Roach are preparing to release their new album, entitled "Time For Annihilation" on August 31st. The album will be released on indie label Eleven Seven Music. The album's first single, a track called “Kick in the Teeth,” is expected to debut in the coming weeks.

The band enlisted veteran producer and friend of Alternative Addiction, David Bendeth to produce the album.

“Working with a band like Papa Roach is every producers dream. It is not often that you can work with a band that has played so many shows, and also knows their way around the studio, and the recording environment," explained Bendeth. Everyone came to the House Of Loud to work hard and we really accomplished what we all consider to be a great record.”

The album will feature only five new songs, the rest of the album be comprised of live performances from the band. Despite the mixed nature of the songs, Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix says the album flows together very nicely and he's proud of the result.

"As a band, we always push ourselves to evolve musically and pride ourselves on putting on an entertaining and explosive live show. Time For Annihilation captures both these elements and delivers the true essence of Papa Roach.”

Papa Roach is currently on tour in the US through mid July, before they leave for a four week European tour which kicks off July 16th.
